Environmental friendly materials have three characteristics: they are renewable, biodegradable and compostable. Sugar cane fibre has all three characteristics.

Renewable

Every year, around 1.2 billion tonnes of sugar cane are produced. From this, 100 million tonnes of bagasse are created each year. Although some of this bagasse is burned as biofuel, much of it is discarded. The production of sugar cane packaging finds a new purpose for this otherwise discarded agricultural by-product, reducing waste and supporting farmers.

Biodegradable

deally, all products should end up in local composting facilities, but the reality is that this is often not the case. Biodegradability ensures that a product can decompose on its own over time. Sugar cane fibre can biodegrade within 30 to 90 days.

Compostable

Sugar cane containers can decompose even faster in commercial composting facilities. In only 60 days, bagasse can be fully composted. When composted, bagasse becomes a fertiliser rich in nutrients such as nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus and calcium.

Sugar cane fibre now occupies a prominent place in the field of ethical materials, and is used in various different industries and products.
